Our Neighbors' Garden is a partnership between Central United Methodist Church and Christ United Methodist Church. It is located at Christ UMC, 1249 Three Mile Road, at the intersection of Garfield & Three Mile, south of Traverse City. Community-wide participation is encouraged at the one-acre Community Garden.
To provide fresh vegetables for distribution by Food Rescue of Northwest Michigan to food banks located in a five county area around Traverse City. To engage community volunteers in a mission project of providing healthy food for those in need through joy of gardening with friends and family.
HISTORY AND OPERATION
This is the fifth year for the garden, which has produced up to 4,000 pounds in one season with the support of 40 volunteers. New this year will be the addition of living quarters for about 20,000 honeybees. Work begins each year in May and is completed in October. The spring work is done on Saturday mornings. Summer harvesting takes place on two weekday mornings to meet the Food Rescue truck schedule, but weeding and cultivating can be done anytime. Groups, individuals, and families are encouraged to adopt a row or section for weeding chores. Tools and supplies are provided and stored in a nearby building.
